Dear Mrs. Parssinen,

Perhaps by this time, you have heard from Sini our decision to move her from the Moll family, and into another family in Madison. But we wanted to write to you also, to explain our reasons for doing this, and to reassure you of our confidence in Sini and our respect for her.

During the early part of this year, we heard from one of Our Ohio Representatives, Mrs. Donald Rhinehart, that some members of the AFS Chapter in Madison were concerned that the Molls were over-protecting Sini, by limiting her activities, and her contacts with others in the Madison community. Mrs. Rhinehart spoke with Sini about this at that time, as well as with the family. After doing so, she concluded that, although Sini was being restricted, she was generally happy in her situation. – This feeling was reflected by Sini, too, in her letters to her AFS corresponder in New York. We know from your own correspondence with our office in Finland, that you, too, shared our feelings at that time.

However, recently a member of the Madison Chapter became aware that questions of Sini’s independence, and of the Moll’s expectations concerning her experience here, were causing considerable strain in their relationship. We felt that these limitations and restrictions placed upon Sini were affecting her ability to grow and gain from this experience. We also became more acutely aware of just how unhappy she has been in recent weeks. Therefore, it seemed visest to move her.

Naturally, our decision to move Sini has come as a disappointment to the Molls. In fairness to them, they did not seem aware of the unhappiness which their own demands and expectations were causing Sini, and are genuinely fond of her. We do hope and feel that, with the pressures of living together removed, she and the Molls will continue to have a warm relationship, and that this relationship will grow. If you would like to write to the Molls thanking them for their hospitality, it certainly would not be out of order for you to do so.

Sini is staying for a few days in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert McLean, 156 Union Street, Madison, Ohio, since her permanent family was unable to have her immediately. However, starting next Wednesday, April 24, she will be living permanently in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Edward D. Hudgens, who live at 7314 Lake Road East, Madison, Ohio 44057. Dr. Hudgens is a medical doctor (a general practitioner), and he and Mrs. Hudgens have three children – a daughter, aged 19, who is away at college; a daughter, 17, who is in Sini’s class at school; and a daughter, aged 11. The Hudgens had an AFS student from the Netherlands living in their home last year. They are very pleased about having Sini come to live with them; and Sini, who knows them, is delighted at the prospect of completing her year as a member of their family.

As you perhaps are aware, we move a number of student each year in order to assure the success of their experience here, so our decision to move Sini is no reflection upon her. In fact, everyone concerned with AFS who has come into contact with Sini has been impressed by her maturity, her understanding and her warmth. She is a fine representative for our organization and we are proud to have her with us.

Sincerely yours,

<allekijoitus>

28.4.1968 From Amy McLean Madison to Sylvi Pärssinen Tohmajärvi

156 Union Street Madison, Ohio 44057 Sunday, April 28, 1968

Dear Mrs. Parssinen,

I have just finished writing a letter to my son who is in the Air Force, and now the time has come to have a friendly chat with you. Our family has so much enjoyed having Sini with us during this past week, and it is with much regret that she went to live in another home for the rest of her stay in Madison. We took her down to her new home this afternoon. She is with the family of Dr. and Mrs. Hudgens, who live near Lake Erie. Their daughter, Melody, and Sini became very close friends during the last school year. They are very jolly and happy family, and we are all good friends. It was very difficult for us to part with her, but we must be happy that we had a wonderful week together, and know that we will see each other soon. I am lucky because I see her every day at school.

Sini left a nightgown in her room here so that she can come back and visit whenever she pleases. We are also going to do some sewing on the material which she brought with her, and the very pretty print which her brother sent. We will make a skirt from the blue material, but have not decided for sure about the lovely print material. Sini thought that she would like to learn more about sewing and asked if I would help her. I like to sew, so this will be very pleasant. We also picked out a pattern and bought the material for her graduation dress. It will be lace over white satin. I will make this for her. This will be an excuse for us to have Sini come and visit with us when she has fittings for the dress.

We are going to miss her very much, and I do wish that she could have stayed. However, it will be good for her to be in a house where there are girls her own age. She needs the opportunity to be with young people. I think that she enjoyed being with young people who are around our house, although they are much younger. I have a Girl Scout troop, ages 13 – 15, so our house is full of young people all the time. We talked much about the happy times she would have with the Hudgens family, and she went with much happiness in her heart.

Your wonderful letter to her came on Friday and also brought her much happiness. She was so grateful for your understanding. You said just right things. I wish that I could be so wise!

Last Thursday night Sini spoke at the Finnish Lutheran Church in Fairport. My husband and daughter took her there and had a very enjoyable evening. What a wonderful time they had eating the pastries during the social hour. We had a very light supper that night as we knew there would be many treats.

Friday was AFS day at Madison High School. Sini brought an AFS student from Uruguay home for supper. There was a dance at school in the evening when many AFS students from other schools came. Sini had them here for a party after the dance. She also invited some of her school friends from Madison High School. Melody Hudgens was among the girls who came, but I was glad that she invited some boys too. She seemed so gay, and was such a delightful hostess. We were very honored that she wished to have her friends come to her home.

Today we did not go to church. Instead we went for a walk in the woods and talked with the birds and looked at God’s beautiful flowers. We stood on a high hill and felt the warmth of the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair. We could see the lake 20 miles away. It was very beautiful, and we were happy together.

I will write again and tell you about Sini’s lovely white dress. When I cut into the material I will send you pieces of it. I am anxious to get started sewing on it.

With all good wishes to a wonderful mother

Sincerely,

Amy McLean.

Me jäämme häntä kovasti kaipaamaan, ja olisimme toivoneet hänen jäävän. Toisaalta on hänelle kuitenkin hyvä olla talossa, jossa on hänen ikäisiään tyttöjä. Hän tarvitsee mahdollisuuden olla nuorten seurassa. Luulen hänen nauttineen nuorista, joita meidän talossamme pyörii, vaikka he ovatkin paljon nuorempia. Minulla on tyttöpartiolaisten joukko, iältään 13 – 15 , joten talomme on nuorta väkeä täynnä koko ajan.

Hieno kirjeesi tuli perjantaina teki Sinin oikein onnelliseksi. Hän oli niin kiitollinen ymmärtäväisyydestäsi. Sanoit juuri oikeat sanat. Toivoisinpa itse olevani niin viisas!

Viime torstaina Sini puhui Suomalaisessa Luterilaisessa Kirkossa Fairportissa.

Sinun,

. . .x5.1968 From Martha Sue Moll Madison to Sylvi Pärssinen Tohmajärvi

Dear Mother Sylvi,

Here in America we have a day set aside to honor our mothers. It is always the second Sunday of May; this year it is May 12. Do you have a Mother’s day in Finland? I think it is really very nice to have because then the children have a special day to show their thanks and happiness to their mothers. We also have a special day for fathers. So then, I am sending you this little card to show you I am thinking of you.

It is very hard to explain to you how I feel about what has happened here in the past few weeks. I cannot even begin to tell you how hurt I am because of what New York has done in breaking up such a happy home life as we have had here this last year. To my best knowledge Sini was very happy with us and truly loved living here at Maplewood Farm, she even told me so. Therefore I am led to believe that someone has circulated untruths as to Sini’s life here in Madison and overlooked all the joys we had together and the happiness we gave her.

If one looks at these past events closely, one can actually see how foolish it was to move Sini from our home. She only had about two months left to stay in America, at least at Madison and there had never been any big disagreements between Sini and our family. She did not want to go and could not understand actually why she was being moved herself – this is what she has told me and a few other girls. Also New York office could not give us any explanation why. This to us is rather odd, if they do something as drastic as that, there should be a reason.

I am sure you can understand how hurt we all feel for we love Sini very much and had come to understand her so well. I love Sini as closely as I do my own sister and there will always be that sisterly love. I only hope that Sini will understand this for you see, since the day she has been moved she has not spoken a word to me, in fact when she left she did not even thank me or Mother and Dad for all that we had done for her. All he said was a very small “good-bye”. This hurt us as much if not more than the fact that she was leaving us for we had done everything in our power to make here happy. The least I think she could have done was say Thank you for all that we had done.

As I said, she has not spoken to me since and I wonder if she will ever know or understand how much this has hurt me. Some day perhaps she will, I don’t know. Thus the only conclusion I can come to is that she cannot face me and talk to me for fear she will show her true feelings, perhaps she can’t face me, or that some one has filled her full of untrue thoughts about me and my family and if it is from a friend of hers she will no disbelieve them or sort out the truth from the false and simply believes them and their lies. I hope the reason she does not talk to me is the first conclusion and not the second, for everybody’s sake.

I hope you understand how badly we feel about all this and know that we truly do not understand  why ourselves. We are not the only ones, either. All of my friends at school and many people in the community who have known Mother and Dad for years (they have lived here in Madison for 20 years) cannot understand why Sini was moved. They all know that Mother and Dad treated Sini just as one of their own and they all know what a wonderful job Mother and Dad have done raising us three children and I know that I would not change parents with anyone in the world for I have the best family life around that many of my friends envy. We do things as a family and we work together as a family which, I think, is one thing Sini found hard to live with. All the same, she had a room of her own and she was allowed to do what ever she wanted to do – it was always “Sini do you want to do so-and-so…?” not “Sini, come, do this-or-that . . !” Thus I know Sini was happy with us, she or anyone, could not have been other wise.

Thus Mother Sylvi, I hope you can understand my feelings. Although I am only sixteen years of age I feel that if any one can truly express their feelings about Sini and this most unfortunate incident, it can be me. You see, I was just getting to the point with Sini where she would come to me and we could have close sisterly talks. I was finally approaching the true family feeling and sister ties in Sini and just as my year’s work was blossoming out, New York snatched the flower out of my hands and so, mother Sylvi, broke one of my biggest dreams. – To see Sini open up, put herself out, make friends on her own and truly be a nine-teen year old. This was what I was building my year around – SINI and her happiness.

I do hope I can still be Your American Daughter

With love,

Martha Sue Moll

Happy Mother’s Day!

Rakas äiti-Sylvi,

täällä Amerikassa meillä on erityinen päivä kunnioittaaksemme äitejämme.
