30.3.1964 Pamela Mundt from des Moines Iowa to Sini Pärssinen Imatra

                                                                                  Mon March 30, 1964

Dear Sini,

I was very happy to receive your letter. I can imagine how much of a surprize [surprise] it was to you.

In the letter you asked for me to tell you more about school. We have about 15,000 students. I guess you could say that we are quite crowded. My school is not the only junior high, there are four more, Hest Junior is the largest though. All of our classes are quite large. I have 6 a days, in all 30 a week. I have 5 hours of English, French 1, science and math a week; and then, also I have singing, pool, gym, and we get study classes. Our school year is broken up into 4 small parts, called nine week periods, and two large ones call semesters. We receive report cards which tell us how we are doing in each class. Although my grades aren’t the best I can’t complain. I know I should work harder to achieve happiness but I guess I’m lazy. Today we will receive our third report cards. The grades we are able to receive are:

A. excellent

B. above average

C. average

D. below average

U. unsatisfactory

I usually get c’s and b’s. My teachers all have personalities of their own. Mister Ludden, my English teacher, is very handsome. He’s shorter than I and is dark compleeted [completed]. He is a minister of a Lutheran church. Mrs. Jones, my science teacher, is quite young and well liked. She is also short. Mister Barnas, oh, Mister Barnas, he is my math teacher, no one likes him. He is always in a very bad mood. He never gives the next day assignment until the bell rings to go to another class. If we don’t have our assignment he never gets too mad. My gymnastics teacher, I have two, are both very pretty, they are always playing tricks on us. Sometimes they backfire. Mrs. Damsgaard, my French teacher, is very sweet. French class is very exciting at times. I try my best in her class. I only hope it will show on my report card. Mrs. Katzer, my swimming instructor is very sweet when you know her. Everyone seems to be afraid of her there’s no reason in the world to be though. Miss Arend’s my chorus instructor is quite pretty, she’s always telling our class about her getting mad of pupils before us. She always is in a good mood, for some odd reason.

The kids that I go to school with, are very fun too be around. In our school not everyone is friends with everyone else. Our students are divided into their own groups. We have a popular group; a semi-popular group; what we call “noods”;  and poor kids. I don’t exactly know what I am. All the kids I go around with are all between popular and semi-popular. I don’t think it’s right to classify people! none of the others school do!

Our vacations from school are not many. We get off three months, as you for summer. In the months of June, July, and August. Then we get off three weeks for Christmas and New Year’s. We have a number of patriotic days, and days on which our teachers have to go to meetings and also we have Easter vacation for four days. We do not get days off for skiing as you do. Waterloo has no places to go skiing. I have never in my life been on a pair of skis. We would have to go quite far away in order to be able to ski.

You asked what kind of books I read. I have no favorite type. I just read the ones that look interesting to me. During our school year we have to read four books for English. This nine week I am reading The Good Earth [Suomennettu nimellä Hyvä Maa, alkuteos julkaistu 1931] , by Pearl S. Buck. I was very interested to read about that article in the “Viikko”.

How many years have you been taking ballet? I do not dance, not even popular dance, very much. I have not taken any kind of dancing lesson since the age of five. At that time I took tap dancing.

I thank you for the picture of Ilmo and Kati. They are a handsome pair. Kati is very pretty. Please may I have a picture of you. I am very eager to see what you look like. I would also like to know your birth date, I want to know about your family and school life.

I hope you can read my letter. I would try to translate this but I am afraid to try. I believe you’ll have a much better chance with it in English.

Love to all,

Pam

P.S. I am sending along a school newspaper so that you may get an idea of my school mates and of what we do. I hope you can enjoy it.

Hyvä Sini,

olin oikein iloinen saadessani kirjeesi. Voin kuvitella, kuinka iso yllätys minun kirjeeni oli sinulle.

Kysyit kirjeessäsi enemmän tietoja koulusta. Meillä on noin 15,000 oppilasta. Hest on kuitenkin suurin. Kaikki luokkamme ovat melko suuria. Koulua on 6 päivää viikossa, yhteensä 30 tuntia. Minulla on viisi tuntia, ranskaa 1, luonnontieteitä ja matikkaa viikossa; ja sitten minulla on laulua, uintia, jumppa ja studiotunteja. Kouluvuotemme jakaantuu 4 osaan, joita sanotaan yhdeksänviikkojaksoiksi, ja kahteen pitkään lomaan. Me saamme väliarvostelut, kuinka menestymme kussakin jaksossa.

A. erinomainen

B. yläpuolella keskitason

C. keskimääräinen

D. alapuolella keskitason

U. ei tyydyttävä

Minä saan tavallisesti c:tä tai b:tä. Opettajani kaikki ovat persoonallisuuksia omalla tavallaan. Herra Ludeen, englannin-opettajani, on oikein mukava. Jumppamaikkani, niitä on kaksi, ovat molemmat nättejä, he aina yrittävät naruttaa meitä. Joskus he epäonnistuvat. Rouva Damsgaard, ranskanopettajani, on oikein suloinen. Joskus ranskanluokka on aika villi.

Me olemme suositussa ryhmässä, sitten on puolisuosittu ryhmä joita sanomme ”nuudeleiksi” ja lapsosparat.

Kuten teilläkin kesällä, on meilläkin kolme kuukautta lupaa.

Tänä yhdeksänviikkojaksona luen kirjaa Hyvä maa, jonka on kirjoittanut Pearl S. Buck. Oli oikein mielenkiintoista lukea artikkeli siitä ”Viikosta”.

Montako vuotta olet ottanut balettitunteja? Minä en tanssi, en edes suosikkitansseja, ainakaan paljoa. Silloin opettelin steppausta.

Kiitos Ilmon ja Katin kuvasta. He ovat hauskannäköinen pari. Kati on oikein sievä.

Rakkaudella teille kaikille,

Pam

P.S. Lähetän mukana koulun uutislehden, joten saat tuntumaa koulukavereihini ja mitä he hommaavat. Toivottavasti siitä on sinulle iloa.

Waterloo, Iowa 14.10

Dear Friends;

I am so excited about Ilmo’s coming, I, or we shall be in Minneapolis on the 8th. Gerald was sent the information and he will arrange to find where they sing – maybe at the University of Minnesota! And to get tickets. I’ll go by bus or train to Minneapolis that weekend. I do not want to drive the automobile alone. Robert and his wife want to go too but it’s a Monday and he must work and then it’s not easy to leave the big family.

I was looking at a map again and I think Mary lives only 60 miles from Toronto, Canada – she lives at St. Catherines [Catharines] – only 20 miles from Niagara Falls if she (or they couldn’t get to Toronto) it would be wonderful if they could be at Niagara Falls when the Group is there. Her name is Mrs Guy Gauthier (French) if someone could call on phone for Ilmo. I’ll write her to try to get to Toronto.

We are all same decent health, oh yes, aches & pains but not too bad.

I’ll write after we see Ilmo Dear God! Make a safe trip for them & for us to meet

Love – Ruth Mundt

Tell Kari that Gerald the architect has designed and built his new house. They just moved in & finished the wood-work & floors, while living in it, which made it very diffucult [difficult]. We hope we can take Ilmo to see it tho’ curtains aren’t up and such nice things. This is Gerald’s last wee to work for a Company – He is going in Partner with one man.

I’ll send Ilmo a note back-stage to let him know where we are seated and where we will meet him. I do not know how close the City of Morris, Minnesota is, but I am sure we can drive there next night.

I hope you can get this word to Ilmo before he leaves. I’ll write to Danish Friends in San Francisco area if they can hear them.

Good-bye for now

                 Ruth

I can’t wait to hear the songs of Jean Sibelius.

Ruth

Tuskin maltan odottaa Jean Sibeliuksen laulujen kuulemista.

29.10.1965 Ruth Mundt from Waterloo Iowasta to Sylvi Pärssinen Imatra

                                      Waterloo  Iowa USA Oct 29 - 1965

Dearest Friends,

How exciting! I can not do my work well, I’m too anxious. I received two letters from you this week and was so glad to hear. Your itinerary had a few dates changed, and you gave me a date Nov 1 for their staying at Hotel at Niagara Falls so I wrote to Mary – 20 miles away to “make hands across the sea” and drive to hotel that night to page & talk to Ilmo. I don’t suppose they can drive to Toronto a hundred miles or more for concert. But Mary is naughty, doesn’t like to write often and wrote some cross thing, so it’s not so happy between us. Maybe her husband feels that way. He’s very set in his ways and all for the French though he lives in an English land. Her baby is lovely and walks already, and here at Waterloo, Robert’s little “heaven-sent” boy Jeff crawls at nine months. He’s big but, been sick a lot. The girls are growing up. Pamela is in third year of High school and boy crazy?

Jerry was writing to me when I called him and corrected what I had written them that the concert there is the 10th instead of 8th, so he ordered 5 tickets, he wrote us now, I plan to go on Monday by bus or plane? In time to meet the train and find Ilmo. We want to visit with him then already. Hope we can take him to Gerald’s house (which we may have to apologize. His mrs is not such a marvelous house keeper and they are not all finished, but she’s nice and pretty and can sew and do many nice things).

Gerald left the big architectural firm and joined with just one other man – He was much excited, has office in his new house – so – I’ll be in Minneapolis.

Oh yes, then but Robert hopes to take off work from the big factory and he and Betty will drive our car (auto) up Wednesday Nov 10. to hear them and even Lloyd may come along. Betty is afraid she cannot find a “care-taker” for babies, and I’m worried about her – Her eye is bothering. She was hit by tiny rock 2 years ago – now it hurts again. – So long now. Will write more as’it happens

Love to Sini, you & all

Ruth

Kalleimmat ystävämme,

Kuinka jännittävää! En tahdo saada töitäni tehdyksi, olen liian malttamaton. Ehkäpä hänen aviomiehellään on vaikutuksensa.

16.12.1965  Christmas card from Ruth Mundtilta Waterloo to Sylvi Pärssinen Imatra

Dear Friends,

and may this past year be never forgotten that, through Ilmo, we have finally made contact, one family with the other. I hope he wasn’t offended in us, but we are just human. I hope and prayed them a good tour and safe trip home. I just imagine, you all gathering to hear the traveler home from his journey. My dear daughter-in-law Betty says what if we could have Sina and Pamela exchange students? How does one do that?

Love – Ruth M. all all her family.

(Remark by IP: I did not understood in that time nor now, why I should have been “offended”.)
